Sayonara Show/Orchids
Reduction linocut inspired by Takarazuka Revue, a japanese all-female musical theatre.
'Sayonara Show/Orchids' pays homage to the poignant tradition of the Sayonara Show in Japan’s Takarazuka Theater. This farewell performance marks the departure of a popular actress from the stage, an emotional event for both the performer and her devoted fans. The artwork captures the essence of this moment, blending grace and intensity with the theatrical elegance characteristic of Takarazuka.
The central figure, an otokoyaku (an actress playing male roles), is depicted dressed in white, symbolising both purity and transition. Her sharp facial features and piercing gaze reflect her commanding stage presence, embodying the strength and charisma that define the otokoyaku. The white attire, including a flowing shawl, contrasts sharply against the black background, creating a striking visual impact. Above the figure, orchids add a delicate touch, enhancing the piece's emotional resonance.
The artwork reflects the deeply emotional atmosphere of a Sayonara Show, celebrating the connection between performer and audience as they share this significant moment.
This is a seven-layer reduction linocut, a technique that involves carving away the linoleum block for each colour layer, adding complexity and depth to the final piece.
Note on Print Characteristics
Each linocut in my studio is hand-printed, making every piece truly one of a kind. This handmade process may result in slight imperfections, such as minor misalignments, areas with lighter ink coverage, or small smudges of printing ink near the edges of the paper. These details are an inherent part of traditional printmaking, adding authenticity and character to each print. Thank you for appreciating the uniqueness of this artisanal craft!
